Job Overview

CIMMYT seeks an Assistant Research Associate, Seed Systemsto support the VACS Seed Systems project activities.

The location of this position will be Arusha, Tanzania.

Duties and Responsabilities:

  • Support the Seed Systems Specialists and other scientists in engaging VACS crops seed producers and other players in developing sustainable seed networks and markets in Tanzania, including collation of certified and quality-declared (QD) seed production in the country.
  • Assist in developing and improving capacity of VACS seed sector partners in Tanzania through training and other related capacity building initiatives where necessary.
  • Provide technical support to NGOs, private seed companies in the production of pre-basic and basic seed production of VACS crops in Tanzania.
  • Support establishment and monitor variety demonstrations/field days established in Tanzania.
  • Assist in preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual reports related to VACS Seed System Activity reports.
  • Assist in organizing meetings (Technical and Partner meetings), training (staff, partners, farmers), and workshops (Seed Marketing, Annual Review and Planning) in Tanzania, as needed.
  • Provide support to other CIMMYT project activities being implemented in Tanzania.
  • Provide support in organizing and conducting training and capacity building activities in Tanzania.
  • Perform any other tasks and assignments related to the projects as required by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • MSc in Agriculture or related fields
  • Experience of at least 3-5 years of relevant experience in seed systems, seed production, agronomy, seed marketing, or related fields.
  • Knowledge in seed production and breeding, extension, or related field.
  • Experience in working with the public and private seed sector would be an added advantage.
  • Experience in working with smallholder farmers, NGOs, and CBOs.
  • Familiar with the implementation of demonstrations and promotion of varieties.
  • The ability to work with researchers, private seed companies, and extension workers will be an added advantage.
  • Valid Driver’s License with active driving.
  • The selected candidate should exhibit the following competencies: Communicaiton, Leadership, Teamwork and Client Orientation.
